  • 0efb4b_34bc27fd82654966b54f98eec0867c22mv2-9870119 Interview and Photos: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets at Desert Daze

Perth based Australian Psych-Rock band Psychedelic Porn Crumpets sat down with me for an interview and photos on day one of Desert Daze music festival in Perris,CA. Check out photos and the interview below: How are you guys handling the heat today at Desert Daze? Jack: We’re hanging in there! We came from Australia where its 40-42 degrees sometimes, so this is alright. We just wear shorts religiously. Luke: There’s a lake to swim in too which helps. Jack: Yeah, it’s actually perfect. How do you guys feel about playing the tenth edition of Desert Daze? Jack: Unreal festival. We were saying before – this is our favourite festival like- ever. If we could come back every year, we would. What makes it stand out to you? Jack: The bands and the lineup have just been completely tailored to – I don’t know, it’s like someone has been through my iPod for the last five to ten years- even thirty years. Luke: If that lineup was in Australia, it would be the biggest festival in Australia. Jack: One hundred percent, you would get like 500,000 people. I think it’s wild they keep it such a boutique thing with a smaller cap. That sort of makes it so that you can go around and see a bunch of bands and feel like that you are fully part of it. I remember watching Flying Lotus last time with the drop of water over there, it was next level. Luke: I wouldn’t mind camping it next time. Tent. Swim. Bands. Booze. Tent. Swim. Bands. Booze. Congratulations on Night Gnomes – really, really cool album and I love all of the soundscapes vibe of it. What is something you want people to know about it that they may not already know? Jack: We approached it a bit differently not trying to convolute all of the songs, and there was space to poke at. You could actually hear it a bit better. I think it’s actually our best headphone listening record. How did you guys go about naming these tracks? I see a theme of different objects. Jack: There are some that are definitely meaningful. Mango Terrarium was named after that because there’s a Mango beer in Australia and my desk just became filled with Mango beers. A lot of it is just working titles. Night Gnomes was sort of your curation of your weird alter ego at 2 in the morning and that’s the night gnome that comes out. I think apart from that it needed to sound interesting enough that someone might listen to it as well. Luke: The band name is so normal that you need something weird. All of your song names are definitely interesting but I found with this record in particular they are more condensed. Jack: Yeah they didn’t have a sentence theme this time. But Sufjan Stevens does that too doesn’t he? Luke: Yeah he’s got a forward slash in there as well. That’s when you know someone is getting edgy. Jack: It would be nice to make a song title longer than the song length itself. It’s a whole book. Imagine if you released a book for song titles that you would have to read….. Lastly – do you guys have any local musicians from Perth that you would want to shout out? Romeo Walker, Ben Whitt, Greatest Bodily Harm, and The Love Junkies.

  • Pond chat ‘9’ and new music at Desert Daze

Desert Daze music festival took place from September 29 through October 2nd at Lake Perris,CA. Pond closed out the festival with an electrifyingly trippy set at the Block Stage. Earlier that day, I had the chance to sit down with the band to chat the deluxe version of their most recent album “9”, see how they felt about playing the festival, as well as plans for new music. Check out the interview and photoshoot below: How are you guys doing on this hot desert morning? Nick: We’re good! A bit sleepy though. Where did you guys fly in from? Nick: All different places – Perth, Dublin, and Warsaw. How do you guys feel about closing out the tenth anniversary of Desert Daze tonight? Nick: Great! It’s an amazing festival and really special. This will be our third time playing. As for ‘9’ I’m really loving the Deluxe version. Were the additional songs written before the original record and what did you want to convey in this new edition? Nick: They were from the original recording. We wanted to get em out and have people hear them. James: We also wanted to release the album cover as the holographic version. We always wanted the original to be like this one but then for the deluxe version we decided to go with the holographic. What made you guys go for black and white with the first version? Nick: There was a bit of back and forth and massaging the direction of it until it became what it was and we all just settled on that. Back to my previous question, I was wondering thematically what were you guys trying to convey from a messaging standpoint with these additional songs? Nick: I think it’s the opposite. The original one is more of a concise nine songs, ninth album. All the songs sort of feel thematically and sonically coherent together. With the deluxe one it’s just extravagant – here’s the rest of the shit we were thinking of but didn’t make it onto the album. James: They were B-Sides. We still liked them as much as the other tracks on the album and we had to get them out somehow. Nick: We left them off the first one to make it more of a succinct album with a deluxe one, not succinct. Whatever other shit was lying around. Do you guys have any insight on what’s next? Nick: Probably make another album and do some more tours I’d say! Get crazy! Can’t stop it now. Do you think ideally within the next two to three years? Sooner or later? Nick: Oh yeah. Much much sooner. James: Hopefully before the holidays! For 9 the music seems old to us now. We started it pre-pandemic so it feels pretty old. Nick: It’s gonna be fun getting back to Perth and working on new music. Interview conducted and scribed by Gemma Mastroianni.

  • MALAA at HISTORY | Review and Photo Gallery

Malaa took his ‘Don Malaa’ album release tour to HISTORY in Toronto on Friday, October 7th. The baclava wearing DJ spun a ton of new tracks from his brand new album ‘Don Malaa’, but also played crowd favourites such as ‘Notorious’, ‘Made in France’, and more. The crowd was consistently growing as we approached Malaa taking stage, and there were a ton of mask wearing fans with signs. Malaa’s energy, persona, and crowd interaction (despite not speaking, which is part of his mysticism and persona) helps make his show experience stand out from others in the EDM space. His mysterious character, movement, and even handing out shots of Jack Daniel’s to fans truly add exciting elements to the show. Track selection was mainly tech-house, and mostly featured heavy bass-lines. He also did a great job at incorporating some hip-hop influence throughout the set. • Kennen talks Songwriting, RBCxMusic, ‘In Transit’ remix, and more

A pianist since eight, self-taught music producer since age 12 and an all-around talented soul since birth, Kennen’s love for music is innate. He gained popularity after his song”Timothée Chalamet” went viral – an ode to a crush he had who looked like the famous actor, the video has over 100k views on YouTube. Kennen is creative at heart and singing is not the only thing that fuels his fire. Kennen has been busy creating new music (album to drop this summer) which he produces, shoots, and creates his own videos for and returning to performing live. The Markham native joins this year’s First Up with RBCxMusic program roster, and I had the chance to catch up with him about his successes. Check out the Q&A style interview below: How are you doing, and how do you feel about summer coming to a close? I’m good, keeping busy with live shows and production projects. I definitely wish summer was a few weeks longer! As seasons change, do you find this influences your song writing heavily? If so, how so? If not, why not? The atmosphere definitely changes, but I’d have to say that my song writing stays the same. I’m consistent all year around, and I can create any vibe I want—which is important because the song you made in winter might not be released during winter. I’ll have to mention though, I did make a song inspired by the changing seasons themselves! That’s “1 2 365 4 me.” Describe yourself as an artist in three words. Resourceful: I didn’t grow up with a lot, but to achieve the level of quality I want in my music and visuals, I had to improvise to make it work with the limited resources. Visionary: Not trying to toot my own horn with this big word, but when it comes to my own songs, I start from scratch– with writing and production, then direct and edit all my own visuals. Relatable: All my songs are pretty personal and direct, Who are some of your current artistic influences? Conan Gray will always be one of my favourite artists. Many people drew comparisons between me and him during his Sunset Season/Kid Krow era. But there days, I’ve been in my Mariah Carey phase, which is so random for an indie-pop artist. I’ve re-discovered her old discography months ago and I was surprised by not only her vocals and creative melodies, but especially her song writing. How did you get involved with First Up with RBCxMusic and what are some experiences that have come with this? What advice can you give artists to find promotional opportunities like this? I’ve heard there were hundreds of others that applied. I’m very lucky to be on this year’s lineup! I’ve received many special performance opportunities, including the TIFF Festival Street. We also had an artist summit a few weeks ago, which was such an amazing experience. I got to meet all of the other First Up with RBCxMusic artists (some were have been flown in from across Canada) and we got to network, attend panels and even attend an Alicia Keys concert. I remember when you released “In Transit” last year you had a really cool way of promoting it by sending people transit passes in the mail! How did you come up with this idea and was it fun/challenging to execute? It was so fun! I came up with the idea during a meeting with my former manager. She was able to mail out the letters, which was so helpful. During my first few shows ever, I tried throwing them out into the audience, but they never made it further than like 2 metres, so I gave up on doing that one… How much involvement did you have in the “In Transit” remix? Here’s the story behind the remix: The instrumental was actually the original demo for the song. In 2019, my singer friend Vardaan Arora came up to Toronto from New York to do some writing sessions. We did a few songs, and one of them was “In Transit”, which didn’t make his EP “HEARTBREAK ON THE DANCE FLOOR”. But, I later revamped my production, going a more chill bedroom-pop take, and put it out as my own song. However, earlier this year, I knew I wanted something special for Pride month, so I polished up that demo with Vardaan’s recording, added my vocals for the chorus, and also invited rache to add her own verse. I’ve been producing for her for a while now, and I knew she’d absolutely kill her verse, and she did! I mixed and mastered the remix, as I usually do for my work. What’s next for you? I’m seeking to exit my current label and continue releasing independently again. My listeners may have noticed I still haven’t been able to release “Art Class” (my upcoming 2nd EP) after announcing it last year, but I’m making sure it finally gets out soon!
